Richard Nixon wanted General Eisenhower to keep him as the Republican vice-presidential candidate. Nixon was accused of having a slush fund, but an independent audit showed no malfeasance. He did confess to accepting a little cocker spaniel from a Texas salesman. That dog was named Checkers, Nixon remained on the 1952 ticket, and got past this incident by the hair of his chinny chin chin.
